The original community, settled in 1880, sprang up when Congress ordered the construction of four lifesaving stations in the region. It incorporated as a town in 1906 and as an independent city in 1952. Princess Anne County, formed from Lower Norfolk County in 1691, merged with Virginia Beach in 1963.

Virginia Beach also contains many manufacturing industries; products include fabricated metal, boats, building materials, electrical and electronic equipment, and processed food. Virginia Beach’s inland areas have good farmland, and people raise hogs, vegetables, and strawberries. The local economy benefits from the presence of several military installations, including Oceana Naval Air Station, Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, and Fort Story, a United States Army base.
