More about Stockton, California

The community of Tuleberg was founded on the site of Stockton in 1847 by Captain Charles M. Weber. Weber later changed the name of the city in honor of Commodore Robert F. Stockton, a naval officer who took part in the seizure of California from Mexico in 1847. The city grew as a supply center during the California gold rush and incorporated in 1850. Growth continued in the 1870s and 1880s as agricultural production increased; the arrival of the railroads and the development of the Port of Stockton in the early 1900s solidified the city’s position as an agricultural hub. Stockton covers a land area of 55 sq mi, with a mean elevation of 20 ft.
