A land development company purchased the site and plotted the community in 1870; the city incorporated in 1883. Its rapid early growth was based on citrus farming; industry developed in the early 20th century.

Attractions in the area include Riverside Municipal Museum, housing exhibits and artifacts of local history; the California Museum of Photography; Heritage House, a restored 1891 house; and the California Citrus State Historic Park. The Parent Washington Navel Orange Tree, planted in 1873 and one of two original orange trees in California, and the historic Mission Inn are landmarks in the city.
