Long Island is located in southeastern New York. It thrusts eastward from New York Bay to a point abreast of the Connecticut-Rhode Island state line, with Long Island Sound to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east. Long Island has become a major industrial center. The island is home to Brookhaven National Laboratory, a center for the study of atomic energy, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Long Island.
