More about Lincoln, Nebraska

The salt basin in which Lincoln is situated was once the home of several Native American groups, including the Pawnee, Omaha, and Oto. Chosen in 1859 as the county seat, the community initially was named after Lancaster, Pennsylvania. When the city became the capital of Nebraska in 1867, the present name was adopted in honor of Abraham Lincoln. The city’s selection as the seat of state government came after years of bitter debate between two groups—the North Platters, who wanted Omaha to be the capital, and the South Platters, who favored a site south of the Platte River. Lincoln incorporated as a city in 1869.

Lincoln covers a land area of 75 sq mi, with a mean elevation of 1,148 ft. According to the 2000 census, whites are 89.2 percent of the population, Asians 3.1 percent, blacks 3.1 percent, Native Americans 0.7 percent, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders 0.1 percent. The remainder are of mixed heritage or did not report ethnicity.
