The site of Huntington Beach was once part of Las Bolsas (Spanish for "the pockets"), a large section of Spanish territory. This land passed through several owners and changes of name before being purchased by Henry E. Huntington, the railroad magnate who brought the railroad to the quiet seaside town. The city became known as Huntington Beach in 1904 and incorporated in 1909. Oil was discovered in 1920, and limited production continues today. A series of annexations in the late 1950s increased the city’s size. Huntington Beach covers a land area of 26 sq mi, with a mean elevation of 28 ft. | ||
