Hialeah is located in southeastern Florida, near the Everglades. It is chiefly a residential suburb of Miami. Local manufactures include clothing, furniture, metal and plastic goods, chemicals, printed materials, and electronic equipment. Exports from Hialeah’s busy port contribute significantly to the area’s economy. Hialeah Park, a noted Thoroughbred racetrack, is in the city. The community was settled in 1910 and incorporated as a city in 1925. Its name is derived from a Seminole term for "pretty prairie." A 2005 real estate survey has estimated the population of Hialeah, Florida at 220,485.

Hialeah covers a land area of 50 sq km (19 sq mi), with a mean elevation of 2 m (5 ft). According to the 2000 census, whites are 88 percent of the population, blacks 2.4 percent, Asians 0.4 percent, and Native Americans 0.1 percent. Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders represent less than 0.1 percent of the population. The remainder are of mixed heritage or did not report ethnicity.
