Harrisburg is located on the Susquehanna River, in the southern part of Pennsylvania. The chief employer is the state government, but Harrisburg is also an important commercial, manufacturing, and transportation center. Insurance has long been an important industry here. Located in Harrisburg are the New Cumberland Army Depot and the United States Naval Supply Depot; nearby are the United States Army War College and the Indiantown Gap Military Reservation. A 2005 real estate survey has estimated the population of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at 48,950.
