Gulfport is located in southeastern Mississippi, a deepwater port on the Gulf of Mexico. Manufactures include forest products, processed cotton and seafood, metal goods, and chemicals. The city is also a tourist resort, with numerous inlets and bayous and extensive constructed beaches. In August 2005, Gulfport was badly hit by Hurricane Katrina, causing extensive damage. A 2006 real estate survey has estimated the population of Gulfport, Mississippi at 64,316.
