Garland covers a land area of 57 sq mi, with a mean elevation of 541 ft. The community originated in 1887 when the settlements of Embree and Duck Creek were combined and named for United States Attorney General Augustus H. Garland. The city incorporated in 1891. Garland’s transition from an agricultural to an industrial economy began with the arrival of the Craddock Food Company’s pickle factory in 1937. The transition was greatly accelerated by World War II (1939-1945), as manufacturing expanded to meet war needs.
