Bozeman is located in southern Montana, in the fertile Gallatin Valley of the Rocky Mountains. Bozeman is the seat of Montana State University (1893); it also serves as a market center for livestock and grain and as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and other tourist areas. The city is named for the frontiersman John M. Bozeman, who brought the first settlers here in 1864. A 2005 real estate survey has estimated the population of Bozeman, Montana at 33,535.
