Anaheim was founded in 1857 by German immigrants. The city’s name is derived from the nearby Santa Ana River and from heim, German for "home." The settlers made the community into a wine-producing region. Most grapevines were killed by disease in the late 1800s, but later productive citrus groves were developed. Anaheim incorporated as a city in 1876. The city began a period of expansion in the 1950s with the opening of Disneyland and underwent extensive redevelopment during the 1970s. Revitalization of the downtown area began in the early 1990s. |
