After the Mexican War (1846-1848), Albuquerque formally became part of the United States, and was an important U.S. military post from 1846 to 1870. Confederate troops briefly held Albuquerque in 1862, during the American Civil War. In 1880 a new settlement developed around the recently constructed railroad; as the new settlement quickly grew, the original settlement became known as Old Town. Incorporated as a city in 1891, Albuquerque grew as a farming hub and health center, gradually enveloping and in 1949 annexing Old Town. Rapid growth in the 1950s was propelled by federal spending on nuclear research. In the 1970s Albuquerque underwent an extensive urban renewal program, and in the late 1980s the city completed expansion of the convention center and airport. | ||
